How to Get Your Dog’s Bowels Moving Again

The digestive tract of dogs is shorter and faster than that of humans. This is why dogs tend to have more poop than humans. You’ll also find that they poop food you just gave them hours before.

What if your dog isn’t pooping at all? Their poop may be dry, crumbly or hard to pass.

It could indicate a serious problem, such as a blockage. You may need to consult a veterinarian. It’s usually something that you can treat at home.

You should consult your veterinarian or an emergency clinic in case your regular vet is closed. If you see signs of blood, such as dark grounds, or vomit, or stools, then it’s time to visit your vet.

If your dog is not pooping as much or their poop seems dry or difficult to pass through, it is usually possible to fix this problem with simple changes in diet.

What Causes Constipation in Dogs?

Eating something strange can cause a sudden change in your pet’s bowel movements. You or your pet may have difficulty passing long hair.

If your dog’s old food contained a lot of corn, beans, or other fibrous ingredients, but their new one is high in protein, they may experience constipation.

If your dog is eating too many bones, they may experience constipation. This can happen to dogs that are fed raw food or even if you feed them kibble.

What is the maximum amount of dryness for my dog’s poop?

The fact that your dog’s poops are a bit dry is not necessarily a problem. It should be dry enough to not leave residue after picking it up. This should not feel like soft-serve or toothpaste (sorry for the mental image).

If it comes out as pellets or is dry and dusty then that’s too much.

Eat to Prevent Constipation

Add water to the food of your dog to soften and facilitate their stools.

You can soak kibble for five minutes. It’s not necessary to use a large amount of water. Just enough will make a gravy that is hydrating.

By adding water to the dry dog food, it is easier for your dog to digest. It can also make your dog feel fuller.

Add Fiber

Fresh foods can be added to the diet of your dog as a source of fiber. It’s common for vets to recommend pumpkin puree in cans as a way to help loosen the stools of dogs, but this is not the only fiber source you can give your dog.

You can feed your dog strawberries, blueberries and carrots.

If you want to give your dog fiber, then psyllium seeds husk is a good choice. Just make sure that it contains only one ingredient and no artificial sweeteners as some are harmful for dogs.

You can also give Slippery Elm Bark Powder.

Constipation can be treated by using flax and chia seeds.

You don’t want to give your dog a stomachache by trying all these different things. Choose the easiest option and try it.
