The Majestic Griffon Bleu de Gascogne

The Griffon Bleu de Gascogne, a medium sized breed of hunting and scenthound dogs, is also a part of the wolfhound family. These breeds are loyal, independent and energetic. Origin and History

This ancient Pyrenean breed was bred by the French in France. This breed has been attributed by several historians to a hybrid between a Griffon and a Bleu de Gastogne. They had been in the phase of expansion but have since been revived because their hunting abilities are more popular.

The royals as well as the commoners hunted hares and small games with them. Some also used them for hunting wild boars in difficult situations. These dogs are part of the many hunting breeds that were developed in France, where hunting was a popular sport to reduce wild boar, deer and other animal populations.

Griffon Blau de Gascogne – Behavior and Characteristics

This breed is loyal, gentle, and affectionate. It gets easily excited. These dogs are very friendly and do not know how to behave aggressively or shyly around strangers. Due to their friendliness, they don’t make great watchdogs. They are also good with other animals, despite their independent nature. The prey-drive and scent abilities of these dogs make them very excited about any tasks that involve it. Because they have been raised to be hunting dogs, their experience in a family environment is limited. With early socialization and proper guidance, however, they will tend to behave well and show no bad habits.

Trainability

The Griffon Bleu De Gascogne can be trained relatively easily and it is a lot of fun. They are intelligent, but they also require an owner who is calm and patient. Raised voices and aggression, for example, can make them feel depressed. Positive reinforcement is a good way to get them interested. If you want them to be active, give them 60 minutes per day of playtime or training. Include more tasks that involve scent to improve their ability to smell. Remember to start early with basic training, socialization, and obedience training.

Is Griffon Bleu de Gascogne Child-Friendly?

As we have already mentioned, Griffons Bleu de Gascogne are not very good at how to behave around children. Their friendly nature makes them good playmates for children. As they are high predators, teach them to supervise children’s playtime and keep an eye on their surroundings. Griffon Bleu can also be socialized with small animals, including other dogs. Instruct your children on the proper way to treat them, as they may become aggressive or frustrated.

Health Issue

Dysplasias of the Hips and ElbowsThe hip joint is loosening up. The dog’s growth and bone wear causes this condition. It causes severe pain, and they have difficulty walking. This is a hereditary problem, so make sure to check it before bringing your pet home. It’s not always treatable.

Acute Ear InfectionIt is more likely that dogs with longer ears will develop ear infections, as their ear canals become home to bacteria and yeast. The dogs tend to shake and scratch their ears, which have an unpleasant smell. To avoid infection, keep cleaning the ears. Add medical drops to dry ear and add after swimming or bathing.
